Welcome to Spirit & Structure, a With A Twist Events series exploring what makes the world’s most memorable cocktails work.
Each edition goes beyond the recipe to examine a cocktail’s ingredients, flavor profile, glassware, ice, garnish, history, pairings, variations and place at the perfect event.
We’re beginning with a timeless favorite: the margarita.
Bright, refreshing and beautifully balanced, the margarita combines tequila, fresh lime juice, orange liqueur and agave nectar. Every ingredient has a purpose, creating a cocktail that is tart, citrus-forward, gently sweet and unmistakably refreshing.
The Structure of a Margarita
A great margarita depends on fresh ingredients and balanced proportions.
Ingredients
- 2 ounces blanco tequila
- 1 ounce fresh lime juice
- ¾ ounce triple sec
- ¼ ounce agave nectar (adjust this to your personal preference for sweetness)
- Ice
- Salt for the rim
- Lime wedge for garnish
Blanco tequila provides the cocktail’s crisp agave foundation. Fresh lime juice brings acidity and brightness, while triple sec adds sweetness and a subtle orange note. A small amount of agave nectar softens the lime’s tartness and gives the cocktail a smoother finish.
Whenever possible, use freshly squeezed lime juice. Bottled juice may be convenient, but it rarely delivers the same fresh, vibrant flavor.
How to Make the Margarita
1. Prepare the glass
Run a lime wedge around the rim of a margarita or rocks glass. Dip the rim into salt, then set the glass aside.
For a lighter touch, salt only half the rim. This gives each guest control over how much salt they enjoy with each sip.
2. Add the ingredients
Pour the tequila, fresh lime juice, triple sec and agave nectar into a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
3. Shake well
Shake vigorously for 15–20 seconds. This chills the cocktail, combines the ingredients and provides the slight dilution needed to soften the alcohol.
4. Strain and serve
Strain the margarita into the prepared glass over fresh ice. For an elegant alternative, serve it straight up in a chilled coupe or margarita glass.
5. Garnish
Finish with a fresh lime wedge and serve immediately.
Flavor Profile
The margarita is bright, tart and citrus-forward, with moderate sweetness and a noticeable—but balanced—tequila presence.
The lime should taste fresh without becoming aggressively sour. Triple sec supplies orange flavor, while agave rounds the edges without making the cocktail syrupy.
The result should be lively and refreshing, with no single ingredient overpowering the others.
Why Add Agave Nectar?
Agave nectar is a natural companion to tequila because both come from the agave plant. Its subtle flavor complements tequila’s earthy character more naturally than ordinary sugar syrup.
Only a quarter ounce is needed. This small amount smooths the lime’s acidity while allowing the tequila and orange liqueur to remain prominent.
Because triple sec brands vary in sweetness, taste the cocktail before making additional adjustments.
The Spirit Story
Tequila is distilled from blue Weber agave grown in designated regions of Mexico. While modern tequila production developed over centuries, its history reaches back to early fermented agave beverages made by Indigenous communities.
Today, tequila can legally be produced only in approved areas, primarily within the state of Jalisco and portions of several neighboring states.
Blanco tequila is generally unaged or rested only briefly, giving it a clean, vibrant profile that works especially well in citrus-forward cocktails such as the margarita.
Glassware, Ice and Garnish
Glassware
A traditional margarita glass creates an instantly recognizable presentation, but a rocks glass is often more practical. A coupe works beautifully when the cocktail is served without ice.
Ice
Use fresh, solid cubes in both the shaker and serving glass. Avoid using the same ice for both—the ice used during shaking has already begun to break down and dilute the cocktail.
Garnish
A lime wedge adds fresh citrus aroma and gives guests the option of squeezing additional juice into the drink.
The salt rim is more than decoration. Salt softens the lime’s acidity, enhances the cocktail’s sweetness and brings out the earthy agave notes in the tequila.
Bartender Tip
Roll the lime firmly on the counter before cutting it. This helps loosen the fruit and can make it easier to extract more juice.
Chill the serving glass while preparing the drink, use plenty of ice when shaking and choose a tequila labeled “100% agave” for a cleaner flavor.
Unexpected Margarita Pairings
Margaritas are commonly paired with tacos, guacamole and ceviche, but their acidity and gentle sweetness make them much more versatile.
Fried Chicken
Crispy fried chicken is rich, salty and savory. Fresh lime cuts through that richness, while the salted rim complements the seasoned crust.
Watermelon-Feta Skewers
Sweet watermelon, creamy feta and fresh herbs reflect the margarita’s combination of sweet, tart and salty flavors. These colorful skewers are especially well suited to cocktail hours and outdoor celebrations.
Grilled Pineapple
Grilling pineapple caramelizes its natural sugars and introduces a subtle smoky note. Those tropical and charred flavors pair beautifully with tequila’s earthy agave character.
Margarita Variations
Mango Margarita
Add mango purée for a smooth tropical variation. Taste the fruit first, as ripe mango may reduce the amount of additional sweetener needed.
Spicy Margarita
Muddle fresh jalapeño slices in the shaker before adding the remaining ingredients. Remove the seeds for gentler heat or leave them in for a more assertive kick.
Cucumber Margarita
Muddle fresh cucumber for a clean, crisp variation that is especially refreshing at warm-weather events.
Perfect Events for a Margarita
Margaritas are an excellent choice for:
- Summer celebrations
- Outdoor weddings
- Cocktail hours
- Poolside parties
- Backyard gatherings
- Cinco de Mayo events
- Tropical or coastal-themed celebrations
- Festive corporate gatherings
For larger events, consider offering a classic margarita alongside one flavored variation. A classic-and-spicy pairing gives guests an easy choice without making the bar menu feel overwhelming.
Margaritas also work well as welcome cocktails, signature wedding drinks and featured selections at fresh-fruit cocktail bars.
